Forage & Hay Marketing

The federal and provincial government, Manitoba Forage & Grassland Association (MFGA), and its numerous industry partners, have worked diligently to improve our forage varieties and marketability. These efforts have met with success. Manitoba producers have triumphed in competitions at the World’s Dairy Forage Superbowl, a premiere annual event held in Madison, Wisconsin, and as a result Manitoba’s reputation for producing world class quality alfalfa is growing. This dedication to the production and delivery of high quality products has elevated the status of the Manitoba forage and hay industry and the promotion of these products at World Dairy Expo and the MidWest Horse Fair continues to do so.

The Green Gold Program, a program developed to help producers determine the optimum day to cut their hay, is up and running. By clipping and testing alfalfa samples from regions across Manitoba, the best ‘hay day’ is noted. Producers who participate in this FREE program run by MFGA receive emails telling them when to cut. The program is being run in Eastern and Central Manitoba in 2013. To get on the e-mail list contact John McGregor at john@mfga.net.

The Manitoba Forage Marketers, a group of hay exporters who came together in 2010 through assistance from MFGA and MAFRI, developed a Marketers Group, creating a website promoting their farms and their inventory of straw and hay for offer. These high quality forage producers deliver to customers in Manitoba, across Canada, the U.S and now, more recently, overseas. Visitors to their website can search by inventory type or by producer inventory, as well as view comprehensive profiles of each producer.
