Genetic Selection Workshop with Brian Harper

Title: Genetic Selection Workshop with Brian Harper
Location: Brian Harper – Circle H Farms, Brandon, MB
Date: February 6, 2016, at 9am – 4:30

The workshop in December was postponed and has been re-scheduled for or 5. As before we will need a minimum of 10 people to proceed with the day. Cost will be $75/ person and lunch will be provided.

In detail the day will include: how to identify visually on any animal for health, meat quantity and quality (tenderness/ marbling). How to identify animals that are high in butterfat production and why. Indicators of structural defects that over decades have been allowed to creep into most beef herds of today. Selecting for genetic superiority in both males and females.

Also, how we can use Linear Measuring as a tool for animal selection for profitable production on minimal inputs. Animals need to be structurally balanced for efficient production and when measured the correlations of the body parts give the information required. We will discuss the process throughout the day and then move to the farm for some live animal evaluations and Linear Measuring at the end, so please do dress accordingly.
